Venezuela

This was a great session circa 2008 getting together with my brother Keith playing drums and Aunt Linda singing.

This is an older tune that I originally recorded with Ginger back in probablyabout 1994 or so. I liked the tune a lot and wanted to reshoot with twang guitar instead of trumpet. Keith did an amazing job with the drums on this and the vocals are extraordinary.

You might think listening to the track that the flute sounding thing on the chorus is a D50 patch or something but it was a real life Mayan flute I bought in Mexico and played myself. I've never seen this type of flute anywhere else and it's got a pretty unique embouchure.

venezuela
the water was blue the beaches were sunny
life was so easy, we were so young
tony had the boat, rico had the money
every coupla weeks we'd make a little run
and me and tony we lived for the danger
when we were bein bad it was so much fun

but you can't go back to venezuela
no you can't go back to that place in the sun
you can't go back, listen what i tell ya
oh tony i'm so sorry for what i done

one night i was late, i walk into the pool hall
i see you with that dark haired waitress and i'm watching you dance
tony i get mad, i make a little phone call
i say you are the big deal, you are the man

but you can't go back to venezuela
no you can't go back to that place in the sun
you can't go back, listen what i tell ya
oh tony i'm so sorry for what i done

blinded by the spotlight men yelling don't move drop your guns
but tony he freaks out, he freaks out and he runs

(break)

the rain falls down over the harbor
the rain falls down, down on my face
i'm kneeling holding your head in my arms
and i'm cursing this wicked wicked place

but you can't go back to venezuela
no you can't go back to that place in the sun
you can't go back, listen what i tell ya
oh tony i'm so sorry for what i done
